The new private tennis club at Villas de Oro opened in March, 2008 and features five lighted tennis courts, with plans for a sunken center court accommodating up to 150 spectators, a retail shop, a resort-style swimming pool, a dedicated lap pool, children’s pool, clubhouse, a recreation area, fitness center with state-of-the art equipment, and changing rooms for men and women. In addition, a sports bar will offer a lively atmosphere and light fare. There will also be space available for small meetings.
The concept behind Cabo’s first private professional tennis club is to make it a “total destination in itself,” where people can meet, play tennis, swim, socialize, dine, and relax, according to Gerry Burchard, Villas de Oro’s owner and developer.
“I envision the club much like the facilities at La Quinta in Palm Dessert or The Tennis Club at Rancho Santa Fe Country Club,” says Burchard. “It will be a place where members can pick up a game, watch celebrity guests play, work out or just spend the day socializing or watching the US Open while having a cocktail at the bar. I want a club where everyone will feel very much at home. Today, there is no such club of this caliber anywhere in Cabo.”
In addition, Burchard plans to have an event organizer to coordinate pro-am tournaments and celebrity events, and a tennis host to arrange games for players of all levels. The Tennis Club at Villas de Oro hosted a world-class tournment in March, 2009, highlighted by apperance by Jim Courier, Pete Sampras, Patrick Rafter and Mats Wilander.
“I’ve been a member of several private tennis clubs in Northern California where members spend the whole day with friends and family just hanging out,” says Burchard. “The Tennis Club at Villas de Oro will be a social focal point not only for our residents, but for our entire community at Palmilla.”
